Scholarship Opportunities
The NAACP strongly believes that future leaders must be developed and such development is on-going. The scholarships offered by the Johnson County NAACP were established to support students who are forging upward on the educational ladder of success.
The deadline for submitting scholarship applications has been extended to July 25, 2009. Recipients will be notified by August 1, 2009.
Freedom Fund
Corinthian Ricks Nutter Scholarship - The Corinthian Ricks Nutter Scholarship was established in honor of a courageous lady, Corithian R. Nutter, who took a brave stand against School District #90 in 1947. She testified in court regarding the segregated and unacceptable conditions at Walker Elementary School in the South Park area of Merriam, Kansas. This scholarship is extended to students to promote scholastic achievement and continued success. The Corinthian Ricks Nutter Scholarship is available to students who are members of the NAACP Youth Council and meet the criteria set forth by the NAACP.
Tomorrow Community’s Leader - The Tomorrow’s Community Leader Scholarship is offered to students who strive to learn and build valuable skills in an ever-changing society. The NAACP advocates that students take advantage of opportunities and challenges that are crucial to their overall development. The Tomorrow’s Community Leader Scholarship is available to any graduating high school senior, who is not a member of the NAACP Youth Council and who will attend a public or private college or university or trade or technical school.
Michael J. Baker
Michael J. Baker Scholarship - The Michael J. Baker Scholarship was established in honor of Michael J. Baker, Attorney At Law. The scholarship is to be awarded annually to an African-American post-secondary student who can demonstrate need and academic promise.
